Animals in Winter

To begin, it’s necessary to have a proper understanding of an animal’s existence during the winter. Much of the animal kingdom behaves similarly to us humans. They tend to hunker down at their home turf, conserve their energy, protect their resources, and shift into low gear for the cold, desolate months ahead. A key behavior for an animal’s survival, especially in winter, is to get lazy—to a point. When food and other vital resources for sustaining life become hard to find and are severely limited, staying close to those resources and carefully conserving them is a must. Burning calories while trying to find food (especially more calories than what the actual food source provides) and then blowing through those hard-earned calories in a gluttonous, greedy manner only accelerates death. This holds true for man and beast alike. Thus, when a bountiful food source is found during the lean days of winter, animals tend to lazily hang around those areas and not venture too far from them. This struggle for survival is also why animals are fiercely protective of their food during the winter and will fight to the death over the smallest scrap!
